Our company has been growing lately and as a result I’ve noticed a few inconsistencies with the quality of our output and some challenges for our team feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff to do.
I decided to revisit our processes and take a closer look. For the last 18 months or so I’ve been at an arms length from our processes while I’ve been focussing on marketing. Our processes have grown and evolved organically with everyone on our team chipping in to keep them up to date.
What I’ve discovered is that there are many black boxes in our business. A black box is where a process takes place but no one is really sure what happens inside that process. One of the other challenges is that we’ve been using Asana for al lof our task management and storing our processes. Asana is very powerful, but as far as I’m concerned it’s not designed for storing processes or documentation and I think this was causing us tension.
I decided it was time to take all of our processes out of Asana, rewrite them and move them into Process Street. I also decide it was time to document the process for creating a process so that all of our processes would be consistent moving forward. I’m sharing these process publicly as a way of forcing myself to make sure they are well documented and I’m not embarrassed by them.
Here is the first Process. It’s a template we copy as a starting point for every process now. It explains how to write a process and includes some key elements that were missing from our processes previously, such as why the process is important, any technical considerations around automation and what the deliverable is, ie: how the team member knows when the process is complete.
